Questions and Answers on AMSOIL Two Cycle Oils

Who are you that you can answer questions about AMSOIL 2 cycle oils?

Why did AMSOIL specialize their 2 cycle oils?

Did this do the trick?

Why are these new 2 cycle oils so good?

So, what is each oil made to do?

Okay then, where should each of these oils be used?

Are the other, older 2 cycles oils going to be gone?

You put some wild labels on the bottles - does this mean more aggressive advertising too?

Are these new oils as good as they are claimed to be?

Q: As Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of AMSOIL,  please summarize your areas of responsibility.

A: I’m involved in all aspects of the company, but my primary areas of responsibility include product development, laboratory research, manufacturing and all areas of technical services.

Q: What is the reason behind specialization of the two-cycle oils?

A: Two-cycle engine designs are changing and it’s absolutely imperative that AMSOIL provides the best possible products for those new designs.   Direct fuel injection and exhaust power valves have been incorporated in two-cycle engines in efforts to improve performance, reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. As a result, we’re seeing leaner fuel-to-oil ratios and hotter-running engines, up to one hundred and twenty degrees Fahrenheit hotter. This places additional demands on two-cycle oils.

Q: Has AMSOIL met those demands with the new two-cycle oils?

A: Absolutely. Our “Fabulous Four” 2-Cycle Oils, as we call them, are the best two-cycle oils in the industry. We’ve been working on these oils for a long, long time and that effort is reflected in the quality of these products.

Q: What makes them so good?

A: We have over thirty years of experience in blending synthetic oil. No one does it better. Like all of our oils, our new two-cycle oils are precise blends of the best base stocks and additives available in the world. We tested hundreds of formulations in laboratory settings and real world applications to ensure that the oils we introduced provide the best possible performance in the applications they were designed for. Our Interceptor Oil, for example, was designed to address deposit formation on exhaust power valves, a problem which ultimately leads to valve sticking and poor performance. That oil was tested in two separate field trials in over one-hundred snowmobiles prior to its introduction, not to mention hundreds of hours in laboratory testing. There was no valve sticking.

Q: So what specific applications are the oils designed for?

A: Each of the oils can be used in a variety of applications, but each is designed for optimum performance in limited, specific applications. We’ve created a chart that ranks each oil’s performance in different applications.   Dealers and Preferred Customers will see that each market category has one oil recommended as excellent for that market. That’s the oil that should be used and recommended to customers.

Q: And what are the markets each oil is recommended as excellent for?

A: The HP Injector Oil is recommended as excellent for direct fuel injected, electronic fuel injected and carbureted outboard motors. The Interceptor Oil is recommended for snowmobiles, motorcycles, ATVs, personal watercraft and jet boats. The Dominator Oil is recommended for racing applications. And the two types of Saber Oil, Professional and Outboard, are recommended for small two-cycle power equipment and pre-mix outboards, respectively.

Q: And these oils will replace the existing two-cycle oils?

A: Yes. The HP Injector will replace the current 2-Cycle Injector. The Dominator Oil will replace the Series 2000 2-Cycle Oil. The Saber Professional and Saber Outboard will replace the 100:1 Pre-Mix 2-Cycle Oil. The Interceptor Oil is new to the line-up.  The older types will be available while supplies last.

Q: You’ve given the new oils an aggressive look, as well.

A: Yes, it is. But we’re an aggressive company. We’ve always stayed ahead of the curve when it comes to meeting the demands of modern engine design, and our two-cycle oils are no exception.   Each has an aggressive identity. Think about it. Two-cycle engines are aggressive engines. They work hard, and the people who use them play hard and work hard. Names like Dominator, Interceptor and Saber speak directly to those people.

Q: Can it be assumed that these oils perform as advertised?

A: Better than advertised.  You can count on that.  And there is a  huge market out there for products that do what they are supposed to do.  And it’s a market where we’ve established a significant presence. Along with our Dealers, we’ve really capitalized on our snocross and supercross sponsorships. This year AMSOIL is the official oil of nearly every major snowmobile racing association in North America.

Questions About Two-Cycle Oil Applications

What is the proper mix ratio of 2-Cycle Oil, and will a ratio different than the manufacturer's recommendation void my warranty?

Is it okay to break in a new two-cycle chain saw engine using AMSOIL Synthetic 100:1 Pre-Mix 2-Cycle Oil, or should another oil be used?

A 24cc 2-cycle pre-mix engine manufacturer recommends 50:1 mix when using synthetic oil. What ratio should I use when using AMSOIL 100:1 pre-mix oil, 50:1 or 100:1?

Is it safe to use AMSOIL Performance Improver in a 2-stroke engine?

Question:  I have had some retailers tell me that your 100:1 Pre-mix 2-Cycle Oil will carbon the valves and make them stick. I started out using AMSOIL at 80:1 and have had trouble starting chain saws and weed whackers. An Echo dealer told me not to use AMSOIL or my warranty would be void. Do I need to reset the carburetor setting? As it is now the saw floods out and won't start until I turn it upside down and let it stand overnight. My Mac saws call for 40:1 and Echo is 50:1. Where do I go from here??

Answer: There should be no need to adjust the carburetor when using the synthetic two cycle oil. The use of AMSOIL in these applications does not void the warranty from the manufacturer. It appears, based on your description, that too much oil is being mixed with the gasoline loading up the engines. The best ratio with the AMSOIL would be 100:1. That will be the best ratio to insure good performance and that exhaust valves do not carbon up.

Question: Is it okay to break in a new two-cycle chain saw engine using AMSOIL Synthetic 100:1 Pre-Mix 2-Cycle Oil, or should another oil be used?

Answer: It is not necessary to break in two-cycle engines with another oil. AMSOIL 2-Cycle Oils may be used immediately in new two-cycle engines.

Question: A 24cc 2-cycle pre-mix engine manufacturer recommends 50:1 mix when using synthetic oil. What ratio should I use when using AMSOIL 100:1 pre-mix oil, 50:1 or 100:1?

Answer:  AMSOIL Synthetic 100:1 Pre-Mix 2-Cycle Oil is recommended for use at a 100:1 mix ratio in normal service applications where 50:1 to 80:1 are recommended. For severe duty service such as racing applications and for hot operation industrial motors that run for extended periods of time, richer mix ratios of 50:1 to 80:1 are recommended.

Question: Is it safe to use AMSOIL Performance Improver in a 2-stroke engine?

Answer: The AMSOIL Performance Improver is recommended for both two-stroke and four-stroke engines.  It is very helpful in reducing carbon deposits and cleaning the entire fuel system.
